  • (This cohort includes Grade 6 teachers in an elementary school model.)

    Level 1 Overview:

Join us as we seek to take the research from Peter Liljedahl’s Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics and apply it to our daily math instructional approach. Build your capacity to lead daily Math Talks, Partner Randomizer Sorts, DARE-ing Application Problems, and Problem Set Tasks and Games. Learn how to transition from” I do, we do, you do” to “You do, we do” teaching cycles that give students immediate feedback, build a growth mindset, and integrate the eight mathematical practice standards. Learn how shifting the traditional teaching approach can open access to grade level standards through embedded differentiation. Learn how to integrate intervention in the moment to deal with unfinished teaching and learning.

As a part of the Math Empowered Statewide Cohort, you will receive digital access to Math Empowered professional development videos and grade level kits that include Math Talks, Partner Randomizer Sorts, DARE-ing Application Problems, and Topic Games. You will have the option of one in-person coaching cycle.

    Level 2 Overview:

Opt for Level 2 if you would like to receive three graduate course credits from Antioch University. You will receive the same professional development as all Level 1 participants and additionally participate in a book talk, weekly reflections, and two in-person coaching cycles. (There is an additional $400 fee for the credits paid directly to Antioch College.)

    Schedule:

Each Math Empowered Statewide Cohort will include the following:

    • Three in-person school days where teachers can observe and debrief a Math Empowered team member model lessons in classrooms. Math Empowered will model two lessons each in-person day, so teachers are welcome to attend half or full-days, depending on their substitute availability. Due to the struggle for substitute coverage, for the K - 6 Cohort, Math Empowered aims to offer this in-school PD in at least three regions of the state each cycle, so K - 6 teachers, special educators, and interventionists have at least nine options for choosing the three days they want to attend. (This will account for up to 18 hours of PD.)

    • Two Full-Day Math Empowered Conferences, one in the fall and one in the winter, at the Concord Audubon Center. (This will account for up to 12 hours of PD.)

Optional Coaching Cycle where teachers can invite a Math Empowered team member to observe their classroom for specific feedback in any area of their instruction. (This will account for up to 2 hours of PD.)

What Math Empowered Educators are saying…

  • “I’ve become much more aware of when my lesson is too teacher-centered, and I’m becoming more flexible to make it more student-centered. There is more discussion in Algebra 2, more engagement in the learning.”

  • “I am seeing what students can do rather than what they can’t do, and that is helping to push the kids further and deeper.”

  • “The collaboration and understanding from these students is nothing like I’ve ever seen! Amazing.”

  • “I’ve noticed students who initially refused to show much work are now asking to share tape diagrams with the class!”

  • “My students love math this year, and I credit the new strategies I’m trying.”

  • “I can already see more confidence in students. They are starting to find their voice in the class. I am also able to see how they are able to carry over information from fifth grade more than years prior.”
