District Professional Development

Math Empowered learners…

take risks, collaborate, think creatively about problems, and engage. They internalize the research that their brains grow through struggle and tension, and celebrate misconceptions as routes toward growth.

Math Empowered educators…

recognize how their own math experiences and mindsets impact their instruction and students’ mindsets and learning. They join other teachers in designing Math Empowered lessons and focus on students’ mindsets and sense-making.

Math Empowered districts…

identify the systems and structures excluding students from reaching the highest levels of mathematics. They join other districts in rethinking math programming and support for administrators, teachers, and students.

What we do:

Support classroom teachers, math coaches, special educators and interventionists by

  • unpacking and implementing new or updated curricular resources

  • identifying and eliminating common instructional practices that create barriers for students

  • implement strategies that open access to all students to grade level standards

  • previewing, modeling, and debriefing Math Empowered lessons in math classrooms K - 12

  • observing, coaching, and debriefing math lessons

  • planning and/or co-facilitating PLC’s, staff meetings, district PD days

Support district leaders by

  • identifying and remediating school-wide systems that create barriers for some math students

  • implementing school-wide practices to build a positive math culture

  • examining coherence of curricular materials across grades K - 12 and identifying areas in need of improvement

  • analyzing curricular materials and their effectiveness across the grades

  • rethinking the math pathways for students in grades 6 - 12 in order for all students to be able to access high levels of math

  • conducting classroom walkthroughs to highlight instructional strategies that either create barriers for some math students or open access to all math students
